Ingredients

  • 4 medium sweet onions (e.g., Vidalia)
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup Gruyère cheese, shredded
  • 1 cup Parmesan cheese, shredded
  • 1 cup fresh breadcrumbs
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a baking dish with nonstick spray or butter.
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Add sliced onions and sprinkle with salt. Cook until golden brown and soft, about 15-20 minutes.
  3. Pour in the heavy cream, stirring gently. Let it simmer for about 5 minutes until slightly thickened. Add pepper and mix well.
  4. Transfer half of the onion mixture into the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle half of both cheeses over it. Repeat with the remaining onions and cheese.
  5. Sprinkle breadcrumbs over the final layer of cheese. Dot with melted butter if desired.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes, or until bubbling and golden brown on top.
