- 4 medium sweet onions (e.g., Vidalia)
- 3 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 cup Gruyère cheese, shredded
- 1 cup Parmesan cheese, shredded
- 1 cup fresh breadcrumbs
- Salt to taste
- Pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a baking dish with nonstick spray or butter.
- In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Add sliced onions and sprinkle with salt. Cook until golden brown and soft, about 15-20 minutes.
- Pour in the heavy cream, stirring gently. Let it simmer for about 5 minutes until slightly thickened. Add pepper and mix well.
- Transfer half of the onion mixture into the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle half of both cheeses over it. Repeat with the remaining onions and cheese.
- Sprinkle breadcrumbs over the final layer of cheese. Dot with melted butter if desired.
- Bake in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes, or until bubbling and golden brown on top.
