  • 9 lasagna sheets (fresh or dried)
  • 2 cups elbow macaroni
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 2 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a large baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.
  2. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil; cook the macaroni according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  3. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt butter. Once melted, whisk in flour until smooth.
  4. Gradually pour in the milk while continuously whisking. Bring to a simmer until thickened (about five minutes).
  5. Stir in half of the cheddar cheese until melted and season with salt and pepper.
  6. Spread a thin layer of cheese sauce at the bottom of your greased baking dish.
  7. Layer one-third of the cooked macaroni on top followed by three lasagna sheets. Repeat this layering process—sauce, macaroni, lasagna sheets—until all ingredients are used up.
  8. Finish with remaining cheese sauce and sprinkle leftover cheddar and mozzarella on top.
  9. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for about 25 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 10-15 minutes until bubbly and golden brown.
  10. Serve hot, garnished with fresh herbs if desired!
