- 10 cups day-old bread, cubed
- 2 medium Granny Smith apples, diced
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 2 stalks celery, chopped
- 4 cups chicken broth
- 1 lb Italian sausage (mild or spicy)
- Fresh herbs: thyme, sage, and parsley to taste
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Olive oil for sautéing
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage until browned. Break it into crumbles while cooking. Once done, remove from heat and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add a drizzle of olive oil if needed. Add chopped onions and celery; sauté until softened (about 5 minutes).
- Stir in diced apples and cook for an additional 3 minutes until they soften slightly.
- In a large bowl, mix together the cubed bread, cooked sausage, sautéed vegetables, herbs, salt, and pepper. Gradually pour in the chicken broth while gently stirring until well combined.
- Transfer the mixture into a greased baking dish. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for about 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes until golden brown on top.
- Garnish with fresh parsley and enjoy as a side dish or standalone treat!
