- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 cup vegetable oil
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 5 cups confectioners' sugar
- 1/3 cup milk (or as needed)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two round cake pans (9 inches).
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
- In another bowl, beat together the sugar and eggs until light and fluffy. Add buttermilk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract; mix until smooth.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture. Stir gently until no lumps remain; avoid overmixing.
- Pour equal amounts of batter into prepared pans. Bake for about 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Cool completely before frosting.
- While cakes cool, beat softened butter with cocoa powder until creamy. Gradually add confectioners’ sugar and milk to achieve desired consistency.
- Once cooled, frost between layers and on top of the cake with your luscious chocolate frosting.
