Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two round cake pans.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and granulated sugar until combined.
  3. In another bowl, mix the eggs and whole milk until smooth. Gradually add this mixture to the dry ingredients while stirring gently until just combined.
  4. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans. Bake for about 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow them to cool completely before removing from pans.
  5. In a mixing bowl, beat softened butter until fluffy. Gradually incorporate powdered sugar and cocoa powder while drizzling in milk until you achieve a silky-smooth consistency.
  6. Stack one cooled cake layer on top of the other with frosting in between each layer.
  7. Spread frosting over the entire cake and use a spatula or fork to create peaks resembling pine needles.
